I recently went on a trip to Japan, where I tried matcha green tea for the first time at a friend’s place. It was absolutely amazing. My friend mentioned that it had a lot of health benefits, so I decided to do a bit of research, and found that because the tea is processed by grinding the actual tea leaves rather than a steeping process, the effects are quite different and there are tons of different health benefits for the tea. I then started my own search on a product that would work for me, while still being within my meager budget. I found a couple of brands that were absolutely great but they ended up being either a) too expensive to buy on a consistent basis, or b) not enough tea in the packet to constitute the cost and ordering. I finally found the very highly rated Kiss Me Organics, and decided to give it a whirl. The product was actually quite good. I found that with just 1 teaspoon in my mug of hot water, or 1/2 a teaspoon to a smoothie, I could get a delicious matcha flavored product that was pretty delicious, and the price is pretty good. I ended up not really liking the hot tea version without sweetener, but I didn’t want the addition of sugar to cancel out the benefits of the tea, so I decided to start adding my STEVIA POWDER All Natural Stevia Powder – No fillers, Additives or Artificial Ingredients of Any Kind – Highly Concentrated Stevia Extract Sugar Substitute (225g) to the tea, (maybe just a fifth of a teaspoon if that, it’s really potent) and it really improved the taste. The stevia is great because it doesn’t have any additives or calories and makes the tea like a delicious treat. I recommend this tea if you’re looking for a matcha green tea, it’s really tasty and is a great value.

So a coworker originally gave me a cup of matcha one day ’cause I was complaining about being tired, and after trying it I decided that I wanted to drink it on an on-going basis. So I requested to receive this item for free to try it out and give my honest review and I’m really, really glad that I got this opportunity. Now let me tell you, I can drink a pot of coffee and go to sleep, seriously. After drinking matcha, I have MUCH more energy than I do drinking coffee. Plus, it won’t yellow your teeth. 🙂 It’s a fine powder that you mix into a cup of hot water and drink. There may be a little sediment on the bottom of the cup, so just add a little more water to mix it with. It’s not grainy or anything, you don’t notice that when drinking it. It also has a pleasant flavor to it (I was expecting it to be bad tasting but it really wasn’t!). There are effectively 24-48 servings in this pouch (depending on if you use 1/2 tsp or 1tsp per serving). This is a great deal!!

Liking it so far in lattes!, June 14, 2014

I chose this brand of matcha based on the price, because it’s organic, and because it’s made with Chinese green tea rather than Japanese. It seems like the company is also very active in responding to poor customer reviews and providing information.

This is culinary grade matcha, meaning that you should NOT be drinking this just with plain water and expecting it to taste like ceremonial grade matcha. If you’re looking to blend matcha into milk or desserts, however, this is an excellent choice.

Personally, I bought this matcha for use in green tea lattes, and it has worked well so far! I would recommend using one teaspoon per 8 ounces of liquid if you’re making some kind of drink, but personally I like to make my lattes really strong for the caffeine kick and do a full tablespoon.

In addition to lattes, I have enjoyed mixing matcha with hot chocolate. One of the best discoveries I made was mixing it with Land’o’Lakes Arctic White Hot Cocoa (which doesn’t seem to have any chocolate in it but is a sweet milky white drink). The result is a quick “insta-latte” that only requires hot water and doesn’t require heating up milk and sugar.

I found the packaging really convenient, and the zipper stays zipped unlike another brand of matcha I purchased in the past.
